From Geekwithfamily - HowTo - 5 Easy Steps to Output Dolby Digital from Quicktime Player (abstract):
- Install Perian and configure it to use Multi-channel output in System Preferences
- In Audio MIDI Setup Utility, change the output frequency for “Digital Output” to 48000.0 Hz.
- Open ~/Library/Preferences/com.cod3r.a52codec.plist in Property List Editor
- Add a new key: attemptPassthrough, Class: Number, Value: 1.
